Book overview

THEY AREN'T ALL THAT PC, BUT YOU BETTER NOT GET IN THEIR WAY!

From the silly to the simply smashing, the Chicks in Chainmail are back to save us once again! Whether defending a charity ball against rapscallion pirates or taking names at a medievalist tournament in the Asteroid Belt, whether bringing a snotty loremaster to his rightful comeuppance or protecting our schoolchildren from magically-summoned barbarian invaders, whether weekending in the woods to get in touch with their Inner Warrior or showing giant reptiles that Tokyo's not gonna take it anymore, these female fighters will always have what it takes.

So what are you waiting for? Pick up your male -- er, mail!

Good series, fun stories

Short stories edited by Esther Friesner. She really can pick a good story. I want to say that a few weren't as great as the rest but still overall a good collection. The entire series is good. Just fun reads, nothing too serious. Just women warriors doing what they do.

The Chick is in the Mail (2000) is the fourth Fantasy collection the Chicks in Chainmail series, following Chicks 'N Chained Males. The initial volume in this sequence is Chicks in Chainmail. This volume contains an introduction, sixteen original stories. and biographies of the authors.

- "Introduction" by Esther Friesner claims that she had not picked the title of this volume.

- "To His Iron-Clad Mistress" by Kent Patterson is a poem about removing the armor.

- "Sweet Charity" by Elizabeth Moon discloses the surprise of the pirates who joined the ball.

- "The Catcher in the Rhine" by Harry Turtledove involves a teenage American and Brunhild.

- "With the Knight Male" by Charles Sheffield concerns the small print in the contract.

- "Patterns in the Chain" by Steven Piziks draws a young woman to a dragon for assistance in freeing her older sisters.

- "Arms and the Woman" by Nancy Kress humbles an arrogant lore master.

- "Fun with Hieroglyphics" by Margaret Ball takes Riva to her daughters schools to counteract a spell.

- "Troll by Jury" by Esther Friesner foils a plot by the mother of Ethelberthina to marry off the maiden.

- "Looking for Rhonda Honda" by William Sanders sends a Public Detective to find a missing woman.

- "The Case of Prince Charming" by Robin Wayne Bailey compels Rose to do the prince's will.

- "Incognito, Ergo Sum" by Karen Everson thwarts the will of Irene and her apprentice.

- "Chain of Command" by Leslie What & Nina Kiriki Hoffman describes the conflicts between a warrior mother and a pacifistic daughter.

- "The Thief and the Roller Derby Queen" by Eric Flint illustrates the differences between ignorance and stupidity.

- "The Right Bitch" by Doranna Durgin puts a linehound in a puzzling situation.

- "Foxy Boxer Gal Fights Giant Monster King!" by Pierce Askegren brings a female boxer to Japan for a championship match, but she finds another opponent.

- "Hallah Iron-Thighs and the Change of Life" by K. D. Wentworth causes Hallah to lose her breath while fighting bandits.

- "About the Authors" by provides short bios of each author.

These tales continue the traditions of the past volumes. Not counting the editor, six of the authors are repeat offenders. Ten (due to a pair of coauthors) are newcomers.

Moon is continuing her tales of Mirabel. Wentworth has another story about Hallah. Ball, Piziks and Durgin also have continuations to their prior stories.

The next installment in this sequence is Turn the Other Chick.

Highly recommended for Friesner fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of female warriors, coping skills, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!
